Rinse After Each Dive: Rinse the entire BCD with fresh water to remove salt, chlorine, and debris. Pay special attention to the bladder, inflator, and dump valves. Inflate the BCD slightly to allow water to flow through the system.
Flush the Bladder: Fill the bladder with fresh water, swish it around, and then drain it completely. Inflate and deflate the bladder a few times to ensure contaminants are fully flushed out.
Inspect the Rip Cord and Valves: Check the rip cord system and ensure it functions properly. Examine the inflator valve and dump valves for any signs of wear, leaks, or damage. Test the valves to ensure smooth operation.
Check for Leaks: Inflate the BCD fully and listen for any air leaks. Inspect the bladder, hoses, dump valves, and inflator valve for damage or worn parts. If leaks are found, replace the necessary O-rings or damaged components.
Lubricate Valves: Apply a silicone-based lubricant to the inflator and dump valve mechanisms to ensure smooth operation. Avoid petroleum-based lubricants, as they can damage rubber and plastic parts.
Dry and Store Properly: After rinsing, hang the BCD in a shaded, well-ventilated area to dry completely. Make sure all areas, especially the bladder and valves, are dry to prevent mold and mildew buildup.
Store with Care: Store the BCD in a cool, dry place, partially inflated to maintain its shape. Avoid storing it in direct sunlight, extreme temperatures, or places that could cause the bladder to become compressed.
Annual Service: Have the BCD professionally serviced annually by a certified technician to ensure that all components, including the inflator, rip cord system, and valves, are working optimally.
