Rinse After Each Dive: Rinse the entire BCD with fresh water after each dive. Pay special attention to the bladder, inflator, and dump valves. Inflate the BCD slightly and rinse the inside by pressing the inflator button to let water flow through.
Flush the Bladder: Fill the bladder with clean water, swish it around, and drain it completely. Inflate and deflate the bladder a few times to ensure any remaining saltwater or debris is flushed out.
Check the Rip Cord System: Regularly inspect the rip cord system for smooth operation. Make sure the cord is free from obstructions and that the system deploys correctly in case of an emergency.
Inspect for Leaks: Inflate the BCD fully and check for any leaks. Listen carefully for hissing sounds or air escaping, particularly around the bladder, inflator, and dump valves. If any leaks are detected, replace the damaged parts or O-rings.
Lubricate Valves: Use a silicone-based lubricant on the inflator and dump valve mechanisms. This ensures smooth operation and prevents parts from sticking. Avoid petroleum-based lubricants, as they can degrade rubber components.
Dry and Store Properly: After rinsing, hang the BCD in a shaded, well-ventilated area to dry completely. Ensure the bladder and all valves are thoroughly dry before storing to prevent mold and mildew.
Store with Care: Store the BCD in a cool, dry place with the bladder slightly inflated to help maintain its shape. Avoid storing it under pressure or in direct sunlight for extended periods.
Annual Service: Have the BCD professionally serviced annually by a certified technician. Regular servicing helps ensure that the rip cord system, valves, and bladder are functioning properly and safely.
